The Leo Club recently held their winter to raise money to provide students with an end of the year festivities and give Leo members an opportunity to earn scholarships. Leo members were tasked with selling candy popcorn bags until January 24 and to Leo Club sponsor, Yesenia Torres, says it yielded a huge profit.

“I do think this was a great success since in January no one else was doing a fundraiser, so I think it was a perfect opportunity for us Leos,” said Torres.

Torres also adds how she is planning, along with the other Leo officers, on offering one senior in the Leo club a $250 scholarship.

Torres is already looking ahead into the future for her current juniors.

“Next year we have to have funds in our account,” adds Torres. “We have 11 juniors who are pretty much fighting each other for the volunteer scholarship, so we need to start collecting funds.”

Three out of these 11 juniors next year will win close to $250; all thanks to the Leo’s volunteer scholarship.

The Leo Club is additionally starting to plan for an end of the year celebration for the entire school. Vice president of the club, Daniel Gonzalez, says the plan for a celebration is still in progress, however, they are still trying to make it happen.

She is in extracurricular activities such as UIL, The National Honor Society and the Texas Association of Future Educators. She has been doing UIL Academics ever since her freshman year and is currently in Mathematics and Number Sense. When she first joined UIL Math, she was shocked to see how she was the only freshman on the team. Last year as a sophomore, she went to the TMSCA competition for UIL Math in San Antonio. This year she was promoted as captain for her UIL Math Team. Her academic goals include to pass all her classes, to hopefully receive internships during the summer, and she plans to lead her Math team straight to regionals in San Antonio. She values how with a little determination, a touch of drive, and with true diligence anything is possible.
