Balancing schoolwork and hobbies is not always easy, but sophomore Aimmy Zuniga-Gonzalez manages both. She stays focused on her goals while making time for music, art, and sports. Her dedication has earned her respect among classmates and teachers at Jimmy Carter Early College High School, or JCECHS. Even with a busy schedule, she finds ways to stay organized and give attention to all of her interests.
For Zuniga-Gonzalez, being a student is more than earning grades. She believes that learning is a way to understand the world and help others. She looks up to the Black Panther Party for their efforts to support communities. “That movement inspires me to support people who are struggling,” she said. She also admires historical leaders and groups who fight for equality and justice. These examples motivate her to consider how she can contribute to her community.
In the classroom, Zuniga-Gonzalez often helps her classmates. “It just comes naturally to me,” she said. Being part of an early college high school keeps her motivated. “It’s great being around people who are just as dedicated and motivated as I am,” she said. She believes working hard now will give her the tools she needs to succeed later in college and beyond. She hopes her education will help her become an aerospace engineer or a political leader, and she wants to continue learning about science, technology, and social issues.
Her family motivates her, especially her mother. “My mom wants the best for me,” Zuniga-Gonzalez said. “That really pushes me to work hard.” She also draws inspiration from teachers and mentors who support students and encourage them to follow their passions. Zuniga-Gonzalez wants to use her education to make a difference in the world while continuing to grow personally. She believes that small actions, like helping classmates or volunteering, can have a meaningful impact.
Zuniga-Gonzalez’s love for music began in middle school. She started playing the guitar after being inspired by one of her teachers. “He was an amazing teacher who always joked about wanting to be a bald rock star,” she said. With his encouragement, she joined UIL guitar competitions. Even though she was nervous at first, she became “the star of the show.” Playing music allows her to relax and express herself, and she continues to set new goals in competitions and performances. Music has also taught her patience and the importance of practice.
Art is another passion for Zuniga-Gonzalez. “I find peace in drawing,” she said. She enjoys creating storyboards and fan art and has made friends online through art communities. Her artwork allows her to share her ideas and stay creative outside of school. She experiments with different styles and techniques to improve her skills and hopes to use art to inspire others.
Soccer also plays a vital role in her life. “It keeps me healthy and fit,” Zuniga-Gonzalez said. “Soccer is something I’ll always love because it helps me work with others and stay positive.” She enjoys the teamwork involved and the chance to challenge herself physically and mentally.
