Jimmy Carter ECHS participates in One Act Play for the first time

One Act play is a UIL competition event where students perform a play in front of judges to compete against other schools. This year, Brenda Ochoa is the coach for this event.
“I want to acknowledge the culture enriches and all of the ultimate grand things that there is to learn about the arts,” Ochoa said. “It’s exciting, honorable, and it’s exhilarating. It is a historic moment for our campus.”
This is the first year Jimmy Carter is taking on One Act Play as a UIL event. Students say they are excited about the production and can’t wait to see how it goes.
“I expect it to be really fun,” Mariana Alanis, a junior, said. “It’s about time.”
Last week, auditions were held for the roles in the play, Do not go gentle. Carolina Amador, a junior who auditioned for the role of Kelly, says even though she has no previous experience in theater, it is an honor to participate this year.
“If I get the part I went for, then hopefully, I get to compete in March,” Amador said. “I’m very excited to be able to participate,”
One Act Play also consists of many other parts: makeup, tech, sound, and lights. Deandra Soto didn’t audition for a role; however, she says she is excited to be part of the crew.
“There’s a space for everybody so they can find something that suits them,” Soto said. “It’s a chance to experience things like the normal comprehensive high schools we don’t have here, so it’s like a little window of freedom.”
Jimmy Carter Students say this production will allow them to express themselves and have fun.
“It’s a way to bond,” Alanis said.

Senior Sunrise: The Beginning of the Last Chapter

The Senior Sunrise was observed by the class of 2023 on Thursday, October 13. Senior Sunrise marks the beginning of the end of the seniors’ high school journey.

Senior Sunrise, an annual event, is held at the front of the school and is centered around breakfast as a class and forming their last memories with the sunrise as their backdrop.

Ruby Hernandez, senior class president, said that she helped plan the event and felt that even though there are different friend groups amongst the class, they all seemed happy to be there together.

“It signified a lot of unity to me and it was such a candid, fun moment,” Hernadez said.

Dominique Brown, a senior who attended, said that she was really excited about the Senior Sunrise as she really wanted to have a memorable moment with her friends before they all graduate and have to go their separate ways.

“After having the sunrise, something about that day was just so magical,” Brown said.

Brown thought that having the Senior Sunrise was important because the class was able to celebrate as one as they had finally made it to the beginning of their senior year.
