Emmanuel Zavala, a student at Jimmy Carter Early College High School, helped lead the Huskies to their first varsity football victory in four years.Zavala, a key player for the Huskies, is known for his resilience and his ability to balance both academics and athletics. Zavala, a key player for the Huskies, is known not only for his impact on the field but also for his success in balancing academics and extracurricular.
“It was an amazing feeling to win and snap a four-year losing streak while making headlines. Since my freshman year, this isn’t the first time we’ve ended a streak like this. We’ve always been able to beat the Donna North Chiefs,” Zavala said.
Zavala credits much of the team’s success to the determination and focus of the Class of 2026, a group that has shown a commitment to turning the football program around.
“Going into the game, I wasn’t nervous. I was excited for it to start, I knew I was going to give everything I had until the clock hit 00:00 in the fourth quarter.” Zavala said.
Zavala believes that one big play can shift the momentum and change the outcome of the game.
“What motivated me to win was that I wanted people to see we’re not the same team, We work harder and are more disciplined than before. The environment was different; everyone was locked in and focused before the game.”Zavala said.
Zavala’s words reflect the team’s dedication and the significant turnaround in the football program.
“I wanted to make the most of every play, and I wanted us as a team to make a statement,” Zavala said.
The team’s ability to shift momentum and redefine how they’re perceived drives them to strive for greatness.
“I didn’t play to my own standards, but I made some great plays that helped us win,” Zavala said.
Zavala’s high expectations for himself remain unchanged, even after a historic win, demonstrating his pride and determination.
