Newly appointed Mu Alpha Theta treasurer Melanie Aguilar grows into her position as an officer.

MAT was previously a club, but it was discontinued due to the sponsor’s retirement.

Aguilar says this club benefits the school as they offer math tutoring for kids.

“I remember coming to help out during the summer to tutor kids that needed to pass their math TSI,” Aguilar said. “This was an opportunity that I got to help those who needed it.”

This is the first year Aguilar has held an officer position for a club. While she felt nervous about the responsibilities, she was reassured that her fellow officers were supporting her.

“This is my first time being in any kind of official position, so I was initially nervous,” Aguilar said. “But now that I know other officers are with me, I don’t feel as nervous.”

As she has grown familiar with the club’s environment, Aguilar has been promoted from a member to an offices involved in the selection process.

“I reminded them [the officers] that we had to look at the math skill, not the person,” Aguilar said. “It is fun being involved in the club’s decision-making process.”

Not only has the club brought Aguilar out of its shell, but it has also provided a learning experience for her.

“I have enjoyed being treasurer for Mu Alpha Theta since I experience new things, and it has helped me grow as a person,” Aguilar said.
